Uber’s facial recognition system not only applies to workers at Uber but also at sister firm Uber Eats. A spokesperson for TfL highlighted that in late 2018 to early 2019, 14,000 trips were made by 43 unauthorised Uber drivers in London, while stressing that its concerns about fraud were supported by the chief magistrate. Critics of the decision have pointed out that those 43 drivers made up a small proportion of the 45,000 licensed Uber drivers operating in London at the time.
